A friend who joined me on a golf trip to Japan in May 2023 said, "Playing a round at a Japanese golf course is really comfortable and relaxing. In Korea, I'm almost ready to give up golf altogether, but here, I feel like coming to Japan once a month just to play a round." On May 8th to 12th, 2023, during a 4-night, 5-day golf tour at Cocopa Resort Club with my spouse and a friend, my friend casually mentioned towards the end of our Nagoya trip that he would like to come back to a Japanese golf course. He doesn't have a golf membership in Korea. Consequently, he often searches for golf courses with slightly cheaper green fees, hopping from one course to another. Despite having considerable financial means, he finds the exorbitantly high golf costs in Korea to be too burdensome.

 

After purchasing a 5-year expiring membership costing around 3 million won, he joined us on this Cocopa Resort Club golf tour. We played 9 holes on the first day, 27 holes on the second, third, and fourth days, and 9 holes on the fifth day before returning home, totaling 99 holes. The total cost per person came to approximately 1.15 million won. This cost included airfare, green fees, accommodation, meals, hot spring fees, and other expenses.

 

There are hardly any golf courses in Korea that offer a 27-hole round. If you were to play a 27-hole round at a golf course that is relatively well-regarded for its facilities and services, what would the cost be? Let's take D Golf Course in the Busan area, affiliated with a major corporation, and W Golf Course in the Seoul metropolitan area, also affiliated with a major corporation, as examples. The green fee for non-members at D Golf Course is 200,000 won on weekdays and 240,000 won on weekends. Adding the cart fee of 100,000 won and the caddie fee of 150,000 won, the total cost per person for a round would be 262,500 won on weekdays and 302,500 won on weekends.

 

At W Golf Course in Icheon, Gyeonggi-do, the weekday green fee is 380,000 won and the weekend green fee is 480,000 won. When you add the cart fee of 120,000 won and the caddie fee of 150,000 won, you have to pay a total of 447,500 won per person on weekdays and 547,500 won per person on weekends. Converted to the cost of a 27-hole round, D Golf Course charges 390,000 won per person on weekdays and 450,000 won on weekends. W Golf Course charges 637,500 won per person on weekdays and 787,500 won on weekends. The cost increases significantly when you add food and beverage expenses.

 

If I had played the same number of holes (9 holes + 27 holes + 27 holes + 27 holes + 9 holes = 99 holes) at D Golf Course as I did at the Japanese golf course, the weekday cost per person would be 1,432,500 won, and the weekend cost would be 1,652,500 won. If I had played 99 holes at W Golf Course, the weekday cost per person would be 2,360,000 won, and the weekend cost would be a staggering 2,910,000 won. These costs do not include accommodation, food and beverage, or hot spring fees, highlighting how much cheaper it is to play golf in Japan.

 

To reiterate, the total cost for a 4-night, 5-day, 99-hole round trip in Nagoya, including airfare and accommodation, was approximately 1.15 million won per person. In contrast, in Korea, playing just 18 holes at a somewhat decent golf course costs between 260,000 and 440,000 won on weekdays and between 300,000 and 540,000 won on weekends. What makes this even more infuriating is that D Golf Course and W Golf Course are subsidiaries of major corporations.

 

As corporate-owned golf courses, they should actively participate in popularizing golf and set their prices lower than regular golf courses as part of their social responsibility. Instead, they are leading the charge in raising golf costs, which is utterly disappointing. Major corporations and conglomerates are already criticized for their excessive profit-seeking, and now they are exploiting golf courses to make exorbitant profits, which is against the public sentiment.

 

The remarks made by my friend imply that he can no longer tolerate the extortionate and exploitative practices of Korean golf courses. He wants to play golf more frequently but finds it too expensive. He mentioned that it only takes an hour by plane from Busan to Osaka Kansai Airport, and upon arriving at Cocopa Resort Club, he realized he could enjoy golf comfortably for 4 nights and 5 days. He plans to visit Japanese golf courses more frequently in the future.

 

Another friend who joined us on this Nagoya golf tour mentioned, "I used to enjoy golf trips with friends and our spouses at relatively inexpensive golf courses in the Jeolla region on 1-night, 2-day or 2-night, 3-day schedules. However, since COVID-19, the costs have skyrocketed, so I've decided to switch from domestic golf trips to Japan golf tours." He added that he purchased a Cocopa golf membership on the condition of not playing domestic golf trips.

 

Korean golfers we met at the Nagoya golf course were very satisfied with the Japanese courses. The problem is that they are determined to fly to Japan whenever the opportunity arises, not just as a one-time event. This indicates that if golf costs in Korea do not quickly fall to reasonable levels, there will likely be an accelerated rush of golfers to Japan. Although the rush to Japan may not pose an immediate threat to Korean golf courses due to the sheer number of golfers, it is a significant concern.

 

Just before the COVID-19 outbreak, many golf courses nationwide, including those in Jeju Island, faced severe financial difficulties. With the full-fledged start of overseas golf trips by domestic golfers post-pandemic, it is expected that domestic golf courses will take a considerable hit. According to the "Leisure White Paper 2023" recently published by the Korea Leisure Industry Research Institute, the course usage fees (green fees) at domestic public golf courses have decreased by 2% compared to October last year.

 

Korean golf courses raised their fees by nearly 30% during the COVID-19 period, and now they've only lowered them by 2%? This is like trying to put out a fire with a drop of water! Due to the amendment of the Act on the Installation and Utilization of Sports Facilities, golf courses must set their course fees below 188,000 won on weekdays and 247,000 won on weekends to be designated as public golf courses, and the result is a mere 2% reduction? With so many golfers heading overseas, are they really trying to make a show with a 2% cut?

 

"I can't go to Korean golf courses anymore because they're too expensive. Instead, I want to go to Japan once a month where the costs are lower and the facilities and services are much better."

"I will never go on an expensive golf trip in Korea again. I decided not to take any more domestic golf trips and bought a Japanese golf membership."

 

Korean golf courses, if you ignore the fact that more and more golfers are flying to Japan to carry out these plans, you will face significant consequences.

2023년 5월 8일부터 12일까지 4박 5일간 우리 부부와 함께 코코파 리조트 클럽 골프투어에 동참한 지인이 나고야 일정이 끝나갈 무렵 일본 골프장에 또 오고 싶다며 저한테 툭 던진 말입니다. 그는 한국에서는 골프 회원권이 없습니다. 그러다 보니 그린피가 조금이라도 싼 곳을 고르기 위해 이 골프장 저 골프장을 찾아다니고 있습니다. 상당한 경제력을 갖췄지만 한국의 턱없이 비싼 골프비용을 감당하기엔 너무 부담스럽다고 그는 토로했습니다.

 

지인은 300만 원선인 5년 소멸형 회원권을 구입한 뒤 이번 코코파 리조트 클럽 골프 투어에 동참했습니다. 1일 차 9홀, 2일 차 27홀, 3일 차 27홀, 4일 차 27홀, 귀국하는 5일 차 9홀 등 99홀 라운드를 하고 결산을 해보니 1인당 총경비는 115만 원선 정도였습니다. 이 경비에는 항공 티겟비용과 그린피는 물론이고 숙박비, 식대, 온천비용, 기타 비용 등이 모두 포함되어 있습니다.

 

국내 골프장 중에서는 27홀 라운드를 하는 곳이 거의 없습니다. 만약 시설이나 서비스가 비교적 괜찮다는 평가를 받는 골프장에서 27홀 라운드를 했다면 얼마의 비용이 될까요? 대기업 계열사인 부산지역 D골프장과 수도권에 소재한 대기업 계열사인 W 골프장 두 곳을 예로 들어보겠습니다. D 골프장의 비회원 주중 그린피는 20만 원, 주말 그린피는 24만 원이고 카트비 10만 원, 캐디피 15만 원을 합치면 한 번 라운드를 하는데 드는 비용이 주중 1인당 26만 2,500원, 주말 30만 2,500원을 내야 합니다.

 

경기도 이천시 소재 W 골프장은 주중 그린피 38만 원, 주말 그린피 48만인데 카트비 12만 원, 캐디피 15만 원을 합칠 경우 주중에는 무려 1인당 44만 7,500원, 주말에는 54만 7,500원을 지불해야 합니다. 이를 27홀 라운드 비용으로 환산하면 D골프장은 주중 1인당 39만 원, 주말 45만 원을 내야 합니다. W골프장은 주중 1인당 63만 7,500원, 주말 78만 7,500원을 내야 합니다. 여기에다 식음료비를 더하면 비용은 훨씬 더 늘어납니다.

 

필자가 일본 골프장에서 라운드 한 홀 수(9홀+27홀+27홀+27홀+9홀 = 99홀)만큼 D골프장에서 라운드를 했을 경우 1인당 주중 비용은 143만 2,500원, 주말 비용은 165만 2,500원이 듭니다. 또 W 골프장에서 99홀을 라운드 했을 경우 1인당 주중 비용은 236만 원, 1인당 주말 비용은 무려 291만 원이나 됩니다. 이 비용에는 숙박비나 식음료비, 온천비용 등이 포함되지 않았기 때문에 일본 골프장 비용이 얼마나 저렴한지 알 수 있습니다.

 

거듭 말씀드리지만 이번에 나고야에서 4박 5일간 99홀 라운드를 하는데 든 총비용은 항공권 구입비와 숙박비 등까지 포함해서 1인당 115만 원선입니다. 그런데 대한민국에서는 좀 괜찮은 골프장에서 99홀이 아닌 고작 18홀 라운드를 하는데만 주중엔 26만~44만 원, 주말 30만~54만 원을 내야 합니다. 더욱 괘씸한 것은 D골프장과 W골프장이 대기업 계열사라는 점입니다.

 

대기업 계열사 골프장이라면 골프 대중화에 적극 참여하고 이익의 사회 환원 차원에서 일반 골프장보다 비용을 더 낮게 책정하는 것이 맞다고 봅니다. 그런데 거꾸로 골프비용을 앞장서서 올리고 있으니 이 얼마나 한심한 작태입니까. 가뜩이나 재벌그룹이나 대기업들이 지나친 이윤추구를 한다는 비난을 받고 있는 터에 골프장까지 내세워 폭리를 취한다는 것은 국민정서에도 맞지 않습니다.

 

지인이 던진 말속에는 한국 골프장들의 갑질 폭리행태를 더 이상 견디기 어렵다는 뜻이 내포되어 있습니다. 자주 골프장에 가고 싶지만 너무 비싸서 그러지 못한다는 의미이기도 합니다. 지인은 "부산서 오사카 간사이 공항까지는 비행기로 1시간밖에 걸리지 않았고, 코코파 리조트 클럽에 오니 4박 5일 동안 부담 없이 골프를 즐길 수 있다는 사실을 알았다."며 앞으로 자주 일본 골프장을 찾을 계획이라고 밝혔습니다.

 

이번 나고야 골프투어에 함께 온 다른 지인은 "그동안 1박 2일이나 2박 3일 일정으로 친구들 부부와 전라도 지역 등 비교적 비용이 싼 골프장들을 찾아 원정골프를 즐겼는데, 코로나 이후 비용이 너무 올라버려 앞으로는 국내 원정골프 대신 일본 골프 투어 쪽으로 방향을 틀었다."라고 귀띔했습니다. 그는 그러면서 국내 원정 골프를 하지 않는 조건으로 코코파 골프 회원권을 구입했다고 덧붙였습니다.

 

나고야 골프장에서 만난 한국 골퍼들은 일본 골프장에 매우 만족하는 반응이었습니다. 문제는 그들이 일회성이 아니라 기회가 날 때마다 일본행 비행기를 탈 각오가 되어 있다는 점입니다. 이는 한국 골프장들의 비용이 하루빨리 적정 수준으로 떨어지지 않으면 골퍼들의 일본행 러시에 가속도가 붙을 가능성이 높음을 보여주는 것입니다. 물론 일본행 러시가 펼쳐지더라도 워낙 골프 인구가 많기 때문에 당장 한국 골프장에게는 위협은 되지 않을지 모릅니다.

 

코로나가 발생하기 직전에는 제주도를 비롯한 전국의 수많은 골프장들이 심각한 경영난에 봉착했던 적이 있었습니다. 코로나 팬데믹 이후 국내 골퍼들의 해외 원정 라운드가 본격적으로 시작된 만큼 국내 골프장들에게는 적지 않은 타격을 받을 것으로 예상됩니다. 한국레저산업연구소가 최근 발간한 '레저백서 2023'에 따르면 국내 대중 골프장 코스이용료(그린피)가 작년 10월 대비 2% 내린 것으로 나타났습니다.

 

한국 골프장들이 코로나 기간에 약 30% 가까이 골프비용을 올려놓고 겨우 2%를 낮췄다고요? 이거야말로 언발에 오줌누기 수준 아닙니까? 체육시설 설치·이용에 관한 법률 개정으로 대중형 골프장으로 지정받으려면 코스이용료를 주중 18만 8,000원, 주말 24만 7,000원보다 낮게 책정하도록 강제한 결과가 2% 인하라고요? 수많은 골퍼들이 해외로 빠져나가고 있는데도 2% 인하로 생색을 내겠다고요?

 

"한국 골프장 너무 비싸서 못 가겠다. 차라리 비용이 저렴하면서도 시설 수준과 서비스가 훨씬 좋은 일본 골프장에 한 달에 한 번씩 가고 싶다."

"다시는 비싼 한국 골프장 원정 라운드 하지 않겠다. 원정 라운드 하지 않기로 결심하고 일본 골프 회원권을 샀다."

 

한국 골프장들, 이런 각오를 실행에 옮기기 위해 일본행 비행기를 타는 골퍼들이 급증하고 있다는 사실을 외면했다가는 큰코다칠 때가 올 것입니다.
