Japan is a country known for its volcanoes and earthquakes, as well as its abundance of hot springs spread across the entire nation. According to Wikipedia, the Japanese archipelago is part of the circum-Pacific belt, also known as the Ring of Fire. This belt encircles the Pacific Ocean and includes regions such as western Chile, the western United States, the Aleutian Islands, the Kamchatka Peninsula, the Kuril Islands, the Japanese archipelago, Taiwan, the Malay Archipelago, New Zealand, and parts of Antarctica.
Plate tectonics theory states that tectonic activity is intense at plate boundaries, and the circum-Pacific belt is a collection of such boundaries. It is known that 90% of all earthquakes and 81% of the largest earthquakes occur in this region. The core principle of plate tectonics is that the lithosphere exists as separate tectonic plates that float on the more fluid asthenosphere. By the late 20th century, the largest 15 plates were mapped out.
The reason for explaining the Ring of Fire and the circum-Pacific belt is to clarify why Japan has so many hot springs. This region has numerous active volcanoes and hot springs, as well as frequent seismic activity. Japan, with its frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity, boasts around 3,000 hot springs. Travelers often associate hot spring travel with Japan, and locals also enjoy onsen tours.

Japanese hot springs often feature open-air baths and are accompanied by well-established ryokan, traditional inns that offer lodging and a rich variety of food, making for a unique travel experience. Each hot spring contains minerals that are said to cure various ailments, providing tourists with both relaxation and health benefits. Historical exploration is also possible, with sites dating back to the Sengoku and Edo periods. In Beppu, for example, visitors can witness the spectacular steam rising from the entire town.
On May 8th, I visited the Cocopa Resort Club in Nagoya, which also welcomed us with its hot spring waters. The resort spans a vast area of 2.5 million square meters, and perched on a hill is the magnificent Chateau Phoenix Hotel, resembling a castle. This region is home to the Sakakibara Onsen, one of Japan's three most famous hot springs, known for its high sulfur content and its effectiveness in treating skin diseases and gynecological disorders. After our daily rounds of golf, our group made it a point to visit the hot spring bath within the Chateau Phoenix Hotel.
Soaking in the indoor and outdoor baths, located at a high elevation, we could relax while gazing out at the fairways of the Hakusan Golf Course and the setting sun over the western hills of the Cocopa Resort Club. This luxury of enjoying a hot spring bath after a round of golf, relieving our fatigue, is an experience not available at Korean golf courses. However, there was a peculiar aspect that puzzled the Korean golfers—a “special presence” working in the men's bathhouse. An elderly female staff member would casually move through the bath's powder room, collecting towels and cleaning, which was quite surprising to us.
Additionally, the bathhouse at this hot spring offered a distinctly different bathing culture compared to Korea. While Korean golf course powder rooms provide Italian towels (known as "Italy towels") for scrubbing the body, this place provided small cotton towels for washing and larger cotton towels for drying off. Instead of placing clothes, socks, watches, and cell phones in closed lockers, they were stored in open lockers before entering the bath, highlighting the Japanese cultural norm of respecting others' belongings.
Through this visit to Nagoya, I confirmed that golf and hot spring bathing are inseparable aspects of a Japanese golf tour. Playing golf in Japan was a leisurely experience. Over the 4-night, 5-day stay, I increasingly felt a sense of healing. Tee times were easily bookable, and there was no pressure from the groups behind us. For a Korean golfer used to rushed and competitive rounds, this Nagoya visit introduced a new world and charm of golfing.

일본은 화산과 지진의 나라이자 전 국토에 온천이 즐비한 온천의 나라이기도합니다. 위키백과를 검색해 보면 일본 열도는 태평양을 둘러싸고 있는 고리 모양의 환태평양 조산대(環太平洋造山帶, circum-Pacific belt)의 일부입니다. 환태평양화산대 또는 환태평양지진대라고도 하며 '불의 고리(Ring of Fire)'라고도 불립니다. 칠레 서쪽-미국 서쪽-알류산 열도-캄차카반도-쿠릴열도-일본열도-타이완섬-말레이 제도-뉴질랜드-남극의 일부 등으로 연결되어 있습니다.
판구조론에서는 판의 경계에서 지각 변동이 활발하다고 하는데, 환태평양 조산대는 그런 판의 경계들이 모여 이루어진 곳이라고 합니다. 모든 지진의 90%와 규모가 매우 큰 지진의 81%가 환태평양 조산대에서 발생하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다. 판구조지질학의 핵심 원리는 암석권이 지질구조판들로 따로 존재하면서 액체같은 연약권 위에 떠 있다는 것입니다. 20세기 후반의 판 구조 지도에는 가장 큰 판 15개가 표시되어 있습니다.
불의 고리, 즉 환태평양조산대까지 들먹이며 설명한 이유는 왜 일본에 수많은 온천이 있는가를 설명하기 위함이었습니다. 이 조산대에는 수많은 활화산과 온천이 있고 활발한 지진활동도 있습니다. 지진과 화산활동이 잦은 일본에는 3천여개의 온천이 있습니다. 여행자들은 온천여행하면 일본을 떠올릴 정도이고, 일본 현지인들도 온천투어를 즐깁니다.
재팬 트래블(Japan Travel)이라는 여행전문 잡지가 2022년 10월 선정한 '일본 현지인들이 찾는 온천 랭킹 베스트 30'을 보면 다음과 같습니다.

일본 온천은 노천온천이 많으며 숙박시설이자 풍성한 음식을 제공하는 료칸이 잘 갖추어져 있어서 색다른 여행기분을 낼 수 있다고 합니다. 각 온천마다 각종 질병을 치유하는 물질을 온천수가 함유하고 있어서 많은 관광객들이 휴식과 함께 건강을 다지는 기회를 삼는다고 합니다. 전국 시대부터 에도시대의 역사를 만날 수 있는 역사탐방도 가능하고 벳푸 온천의 경우 마을 전역에서 치솟는 수증기 장관을 볼 수 있습니다.
제가 5월 8일 방문한 나고야 소재 코코파 리조트 클럽에도 온천수가 한국에서 찾아간 이들을 반겨주었습니다. 250만평의 광활한 면적을 자랑하는 코코파 리조트 클럽의 한 귀퉁이 언덕배기에는 성(城)처럼 위용을 자랑하는 샤토 피닉스 호텔이 자리 잡고 있습니다. 이 지역에는 일본 3대 명천으로 불리는 사카키바라온천이 있는데, 유황성분이 많아 피부병과 부인병 치료에 탁월한 효과가 있는 것으로 알려지고 있습니다. 우리 일행은 매일 라운드가 끝나면 필수적으로 찾은 곳이 샤토 피닉스 호텔 내에 있는 온천탕이었습니다.
고지대에 위치해 있는 온천탕과 노천탕에 몸을 담근채 창밖을 통해 코코파 리조트 클럽의 학산골프장 페어웨이와 서산 노을을 바라보면서 느긋한 휴식을 즐길 수 있었습니다. 라운드를 마친 뒤 온천욕까지 즐기며 피로를 푸는 즐거움, 한국 골프장에서는 맛볼 수 없는 호사였습니다. 그런데 남성 온천탕에 근무하는 '특별한 존재'때문에 한국 골퍼들을 어리둥절하게 했습니다. 나이 지긋한 여성 직원이 거리낌 없이 욕탕 파우더룸을 왔다 갔다 하며 타월 등을 수거하거나 청소를 하고 있었기 때문입니다.
또 이곳 온천탕에서는 한국과 확연히 다른 목욕문화를 접할 수 있었습니다. 한국 골프장 파우더룸에는 이태리 타월(일명 때수건)을 비치, 몸을 닦도록 하는데 비해 이곳에서는 작은 면수건이 제공되었습니다. 작은 면수건으로 몸을 씻고 큰 면수건으로 물기를 닦습니다. 벗은 옷가지나 양말, 시계, 휴대폰 등을 폐쇄형 로커에 넣는 것이 아니라 개방형 사물함에 두고 온천탕에 들어가도록 되어 있는 것도 색다른 점이었습니다. 남의 물건에 절대로 손을 대지 않는 일본인의 생활문화가 크게 작용했기 때문으로 보입니다.
일본 골프투어에서 골프와 온천욕은 불가분의 관계임을 이번 나고야 방문을 통해 확인했습니다. 일본에서의 골프 라운드는 여유 그 자체였습니다. 4박 5일 동안 지내면서 시간이 지날수록 힐링을 하고 있다는 느낌을 강하게 받았습니다. 언제든지 예약이 가능하고 뒷팀에게 쫓기지 않아도 됩니다. 전쟁 치르는 듯이 라운드를 해온 한국 골퍼 입장에서는 이번 나고야 방문을 통해 골프의 새로운 세계와 묘미에 빠져들 수 있었습니다.
