The "Sky Enjoying Golf Monument," or the "Azure Sky Golf Monument," stands in front of the clubhouse bath at Tongdo Finest Country Club. The term "Sky Enjoying Golf" refers to the enjoyment of hitting a white golf ball high into the blue sky.

 

 

"Be the joyous ball game under the azure sky!

This phrase encapsulates the essence of golf in a single breath.

 

In the azure sky, the white golf ball soars and flies,

But it's not just any ball.

 

It's a ball brimming with all the joy,

The white golf ball is none other than the joyous ball game."

 

The 'Heavenly Joy Monument' that catches the eye with its dignity

Located near Tongdosa in Yangsan, Gyeongsangnam-do, adjacent to Busan, Tongdo Finest Country Club is situated along the Gyeongbu Expressway. The golf course began operations in August 1984 with 18 holes on the South Course, and in December 1985, it expanded to 36 holes with the addition of the North Course. Known for its quaint and nature-friendly design, it has garnered much love from golfers in Busan and Gyeongsangnam-do. In 2008, with a change in ownership, the golf course's name was changed from 'Tongdo CC' to 'Tongdo Finest CC'.

After finishing a round at this golf course, while soaking in a warm bath, you can leisurely gaze out the window to find a massive monument right before your eyes. This is the 'Heavenly Joy Monument'. It's not something you can easily notice; you have to look carefully.

 

In the early 2000s, when I was deeply immersed in golf, often shooting scores in the 90s or 80s, I frequented this golf course. One day, by chance, I discovered this monument in the bathhouse and wondered why they chose such fitting words.

 

At the entrance road and throughout the golf course grounds of Tongdo Finest Country Club, there are many beautiful cherry blossom trees that have been standing for decades. In early spring, cherry blossoms bloom magnificently here, creating a stunning spectacle.

On March 25, 2023, as the president of my high school alumni association and a member of this golf club, I had the special privilege of enjoying a round of golf thanks to a favor from Dr. H, who runs a private hospital. Accompanying me were my high school classmate, Professor L, and the former principal, K. It had been a long time since I visited, so I was curious to see if the "Changcheon Nakgu Monument" was still there. As I approached, I noticed that moss, which I had never seen before, had grown abundantly on the blue stone head of the monument, bearing the traces of over 20 years.

It's a truly astounding expression, condensing the essence of golf into just four letters.

 

At the end of March and the beginning of April, golfers visiting Tongdo Finest Country Club can enjoy another great pleasure. It's the privilege of indulging in the cherry blossom paradise, a sight rarely seen on any other golf course. The reason I specifically asked Dr. H was because I wanted to immerse myself in this cherry blossom heaven. When I attended the winter round invited by Dr. H on January 21, I expressed my desire to see the cherry blossom festival at Tongdo Finest Country Club, and thankfully, Dr. H didn't forget and invited me again.

 

Enjoyed a fantastic 'cherry blossom feast' moment

Tongdo Finest Country Club is a renowned spot for cherry blossom viewing. As you enter the entrance road leading to the golf course, you are greeted by thousands of cherry blossom trees lining both sides for 3 to 5 kilometers, creating an illusion as if they are applauding. These cherry blossom trees, planted when the golf course opened, have now grown into majestic trees with branches extending over 10 meters, forming a 'tunnel' that covers the sky.

In spring, it becomes a 'cherry blossom tunnel' with more blossoms than stars in the Milky Way. In summer, it transforms into a 'shade tunnel' with lush cherry tree leaves providing shade, while in autumn, it turns into a 'cherry tree foliage tunnel' boasting vibrant yellow and red colors. Each season offers a unique and mesmerizing spectacle.

 

As you are enchanted by the white cherry blossoms scattered by the cherry tree giants along the entrance road, another cherry blossom paradise awaits on the South Course. Especially, the cherry blossoms on the 2nd hole of the South Course captivate golfers with their splendor. While people visit with their families to admire the cherry blossoms, golfers take pride in simply playing a round at Tongdo Pinestead CC's South Course, boasting that they have enjoyed cherry blossom viewing to the fullest extent.

 

The South Course serves as a hidden gem for cherry blossom viewing. It allows golfers to enjoy both the thrill of playing and the beauty of cherry blossoms simultaneously, akin to catching crayfish in a ditch while fishing. On this day, amidst the enchanting cherry blossoms, I was so engrossed in capturing the scenery with my phone camera that I carelessly hit an 'out of bounds' with my golf shot and found myself in a bunker, resulting in a double bogey.

 

The majestic flight of the eagle in Yeongchuksan, make it mine

When you visit Tongdo Finest Country Club, another delightful experience awaits you. It's the profound sense of the "eagle's majestic presence" on the west side of the golf course, which is embraced by Yeongchuksan, a 1,400-year-old temple. Tongdosa Temple, founded by Monk Janggol, during the reign of Queen Seondeok of Silla in 646 AD, is one of Korea's three major temples and one of the Eight Great Temples. It's renowned for enshrining the sarira of Buddha Sakyamuni in the Jeokmyeolbogung Hall, also known as the "Treasure Palace of Nirvana."

Yeongchuksan, one of the nine peaks of the Yeongnam Alps, rises majestically to an elevation of 1,081 meters, offering a breathtaking mountain landscape. Particularly when viewed from Tongdo Pinestead Country Club, Yeongchuksan appears like a soaring eagle, spreading its wings as if ascending to the heavens. The imposing presence of Yeongchuksan, especially seen from the tee ground of the 9th hole on the South Course, is awe-inspiring. Before teeing off on the 9th hole, I always take a deep breath to fully embrace the spirit of the "Yeongchuksan Eagle."

 

Through today's round, I once again realized that golf is a sport deeply connected to the law of karma. It's not just an exercise enjoyed casually with anyone, but rather intricately linked to the trajectory of life. Today's round with H Director, Professor L, and Former Principal K, all my high school classmates, was a noble occasion where we could openly share our hearts. I pleaded with Director H to arrange another meeting here during the autumn foliage season. So, I'm already looking forward to the autumn round at Tongdo Pinestead Country Club.

창천(蒼天)에 낙구(樂球)이어라!

골프의 속성을 한마디로 압축, 대변해 주는 글귀입니다.

 

푸른 하늘(蒼天)에 하얀 골프 볼(白球)을 붕붕 날리는데,

그 볼은 그냥 볼이 아닙니다.

 

모든 즐거움이 응축된 공,

하얀 골프 볼이 바로 낙구(樂球)인 것입니다.

 

예의주시해야 눈에 띄는 '창천낙구碑'

부산 근교 경남 양산 통도사 인근 경부고속도로변에 위치한 통도파인이스트 cc. 이 골프장은 1984년 8월에 남코스 18홀로 영업을 시작한 뒤 1985년 12월에 북코스 18홀이 더 보태지면서 36홀로 운영되고 있습니다. 아기자기하면서도 워낙 자연친화적으로 설계되어 있어 부산 경남 골퍼들의 많은 사랑을 받고 있습니다. 2008년 골프장 주인이 바뀌면서 골프장 명칭도 '통도 cc'에서 '통도파인이스트 cc'로 변경되었습니다.

이 골프장에서는 라운드를 마치고 뜨끈뜨끈한 욕탕에 몸을 담근 채 지긋이 창밖을 바라보면 거대한 비석이 훅 눈앞에 다가옵니다. 바로 이 '창천낙구碑'입니다. 예사롭게 대하면 볼 수 없고 주의 깊게 봐야 이 비석이 눈에 들어옵니다.

 

90대, 80대 타수를 맴돌면서 한창 골프에 빠져 있을 때인 2000년 초반부터 저는 이 골프장을 자주 찾았습니다. 그 당시 어느 날 우연히 욕탕에서 이 비석을 발견하고선 골프하고 어쩜 그렇게 잘 맞는 글귀를 선택했을까 하고 탄복한 적이 있었습니다.

 

세월의 흔적 '돌이끼' 잔뜩 자라고 있더라

2023년 3월 25일. 저는 고교동기회의 회장이자 이 골프장 회원으로서 개인병원을 경영하는 H원장에게 특별히 부탁해 이날 라운드를 즐길 수 있었습니다. 동반자는 고교 동기인 L 교수와 교장 출신인 K였습니다. 오랜만에 찾은 터라 창천낙구비가 잘 있는지 궁금해서 가까이 가봤더니 예전에는 볼 수 없었던 푸른 돌이끼가 잔뜩 자라고 있었습니다. 20여 년이란 세월의 흔적을 비석 머리에 잔뜩 이고 있었던 것입니다.

골프의 속성을 단 네글자로 정리한

참으로 기막힌 표현입니다.

 

3월 말, 4월 초 통도파인이스트 cc를 찾는 골퍼들은 또 다른 큰 즐거움을 누릴 수 있습니다. 세상 어떤 골프장에서도 보기 힘든 벚꽃세상을 맘껏 감상할 수 있는 특권이 주어지기 때문입니다. 제가 H원장에게 특별히 부탁한 이유도 바로 이 벚꽃 천지에 흠뻑 빠지고 싶었기 때문입니다. 지난 1월 21일 H원장 초청으로 겨울 라운드를 할 때 통도파인이스트 cc의 벚꽃 잔치를 보고 싶다고 부탁했더니, H 원장은 고맙게도 잊지 않고 불러주었습니다.

 

환상의 '벚꽃 잔치' 즐기는 호사 누리게

통도파인이스트 cc는 벚꽃을 감상하기에는 명소 중에 명소입니다. 고속도로를 벗어나 골프장으로 향하는 진입로에 들어서면 3~5㎞에 달하는 클럽하우스까지 양쪽에 쫙 도열해 있는 수천 그루의 벚나무들이 박수를 쳐 주는 듯한 착각에 빠지게 합니다. 골프장 개장 당시 심어졌으면 수령은 40년이나 됩니다. 그래서인지 지금은 10m 이상 자라 거목이 된 벚나무의 가지들이 하늘을 가려줘서 '터널'이 되어 버렸습니다.

봄에는 은하수 별보다 더 많은 벚꽃이 만들어주는 '벚꽃 터널'로, 여름에는 무성한 벚나무 이파리가 만들어주는 '그늘 터널'로, 가을에는 노랑 빨강색의 '벚나무 단풍 터널'로 바뀌어서 계절별로 변화무쌍함을 자랑합니다.

 

진입로의 벚나무 거목이 흩뿌려주는 하얀 벚꽃에 취해서 올라가면 남코스 벚꽃천지가 또 기다리고 있습니다. 특히 남아웃코스 2번 홀 벚꽃은 골퍼들을 황홀의 극치로 몰고 갑니다. 사람들은 벚꽃 구경을 하기 위해 가족들과 명소를 찾아 나섭니다. 그러나 골퍼들 사이에서는 통도파인이스트 cc 남코스를 라운드 하는 것만으로도 벚꽃 구경 실컷 했다고 자랑할 정도입니다.

 

남코스는 숨어있는 벚꽃 감상 명소인 셈입니다. 도랑치고 가재 잡듯이, 라운드 하고 벚꽃 구경도 하는 호사를 동시에 누리는 것입니다. 저는 이날 벚꽃 황홀경에 취한 채 열심히 휴대폰 카메라 셔터를 누르느라 정신이 팔려 '막창 OB'도 한 방 내고, 티샷을 벙커에 빠트려 더블보기를 잡아야 했습니다.

 

영축산의 '독수리 웅비 기세' 내 것으로

통도파인이스트 cc를 찾으면 또 한 가지 즐거움이 기다리고 있습니다. 이 골프장 서쪽 맞은편에 있는 1,400년 고찰 통도사를 안고 있는 영축산의 '독수리 기세'를 한껏 가슴에 안을 수 있는 즐거움이 그것입니다. 646년 신라 선덕여왕 때 자장율사가 창건한 통도사는 한국의 삼보사찰 중 하나이자 팔대총림 중 하나로 석가모니의 진신사리가 안치된 적멸보궁(寂滅寶宮)이 있어 불보(佛寶) 사찰로도 불립니다.

영남알프스 9봉 중에 하나인 영축산은 해발 1,081m에 이를 정도로 웅장한 산세를 보여줍니다. 특히 통도파인이스트 cc에서 바라보는 영축산은 거대한 독수리가 양 날개를 쫘악 펴고 천상으로 박차 오르는 듯한 기세등등한 형상을 하고 있어 이를 쳐다보는 것만으로도 엄청난 기(氣)를 받는 착각에 빠질 정도입니다. 남인코스 9번 홀 티잉 그라운드에서 바라보는 영축산의 기세는 압권입니다. 저는 항상 이 9번 홀 티샷을 하기 전에 심호흡을 합니다. '영축산 독수리'를 가슴에 마음껏 받아들이기 위해서.

 

이날의 라운드를 통해 저는 골프가 지극히 인연법과 닿아있는 운동이라는 점을 또 한 번 절감했습니다. 그냥 아무렇게나 누구와 만나 즐기는 운동이 아니라 삶의 궤적과 끈끈하게 연결되어 있는 것이 골프인 것이지요. 50년 전 까까머리로 만난 H원장, L교수, K 전 교장과의 이날 라운드는 고교동기(高校同期)끼리 맘껏 회포를 풀 수 있는 고귀한 자리였습니다. 저는 H 원장에게 가을 단풍이 절경을 이룰 때쯤 다시 이곳에서 만나게 해달라고 졸랐습니다. 그래서 통도파인이스트 cc에서의 가을 라운드가 벌써 기다려집니다.
