매치플레이는 홀마다 승자를 결정하고 18홀 경기를 끝낸다음 이긴 홀 수가 많은 선수를 우승자로 가립니다. 현재 대부분의 대회는 스트로크 플레이의 추세로 가고 있지만 근대골프가 발생했을 당시에는 매치 플레이로 경기를 했다고 합니다. 두 선수가 1대 1로 경기를 펼치는데 1홀을 이기면 1 업(up), 지면 1 다운(down), 무승부면 하프(half)로 부르며 승부가 같은 수일 경우 올 스퀘어(all square)로 부릅니다.
스트로크 플레이나 매치 플레이가 개인 경기라면 팀별 경기방법으로는 포섬 매치(foursome match)와 포볼 매치(four-ball match)가 있습니다. 포섬 매치는 각 팀당 2명의 선수가 한 조를 이뤄 볼 한 개를 번갈아 쳐 타수 결과로 승부를 결정짓는 경기방식입니다. 한 선수의 실수가 다음에 칠 선수에게 직접적인 영향을 미치기 때문에 두 선수의 호흡이 잘 맞아야 합니다. 포볼 매치는 2명이 한 조를 이룬 두 조, 즉 4명의 선수가 각자의 공으로 티오프해서 경기를 계속하되 매 홀별로 각 조의 적은 쪽 점수, 즉 베스트 볼을 그 홀을 점수로 매겨 승부를 결정짓는 경기를 말합니다.

그렇다면 아마추어 골퍼는 어떤 내기를 할까요? 한 타에 얼마씩을 걸거나 플레이어 각자가 낸 일정 금액으로 상금을 만든 뒤 스크로크 플레이 결과에 따라 승자가 상금을 많이 가지는 식으로 경기를 펼칩니다. 내기 골프를 하게 되면 각 플레이어들은 경기에 집중하게 되지요. 내기 없이 그냥 밋밋하게 칠 때와 돈을 걸고 내기골프를 할 때의 분위기는 완전히 달라집니다.
