Pulling the cart myself and going for a round, I felt 'double the joy' <44>

In April 2023, I had the opportunity to attend the seminar and executive appointment ceremony of the Asia Golf Association held at Jungwon University campus in Goesan-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do. Following the event, I and my colleagues enjoyed a round of golf at the 9-hole golf course located within the university campus. The Asia Golf Association Executive Seminar: Discussing Future Development

I attended a seminar and executive appointment ceremony for the Asia Golf Association (ASIAGA) on April 15th and 16th, 2023, at Jungwoon University in Goesan-eup, Chungcheongbuk-do. On the first day, April 15th, there was an appointment ceremony and a presentation by President Kim Yong-ho on the future development vision of the federation. On the 16th, executives were organized into teams and enjoyed a round of golf at the golf practice facility within Jungwoon University campus.

Established as a corporation in 2016, ASIAGA positions itself as "the association opening the future of Asian golf." It holds its own selection tournaments three times a year (May, August, October), through which professionals are selected, offering prize money ranging from 15 to 50 million won, and holds three open tours annually. ASIAGA has also signed agreements with the Australian PGA, PGAM, and Ank Golf. Players from the Malaysian PGA also participate in ASIAGA tournaments, making it an international event. This year, ASIAGA plans to appoint regional headquarters and branch managers nationwide to further activate the organization. We sincerely ask for the continued support and interest of golfers in the future development of ASIAGA.

The 9-hole Jungwoon University golf practice facility is popular enough to require reservations on the same day

The Jungwoon University Golf Practice Facility (jwugolf.jwu.ac.kr) exceeded my expectations. Designed as an eco-friendly golf course, it was built not only for students' academic needs but also for the welfare of faculty and staff, as well as for leisure activities for guests. Comprising seven short holes (par 3) and two middle holes (par 4), totaling nine holes, one needs to go around twice for an 18-hole round. The facility operates on a reservation basis, and due to its popularity, the staff warned me that same-day reservations fill up quickly.

The popularity of this golf course became evident as I played a round. Operated without caddies, and with the option of pulling around self-carts (free of charge), exploring every nook and cranny of the golf course felt like 'freedom itself.' The ability to effortlessly pull the cart added to the enjoyment, perhaps doubling the pleasure. The golf course featured suitable elevations, making the 18-hole round quite demanding physically. Tee-off times were spaced 10 minutes apart, allowing for a relaxed round without worrying about the pace of play.

 

When you hear 'no caddies - self-carts, ' what comes to mind? It likely suggests affordable rounds. Green fees at the Jungwoon University Golf Practice Facility are 50,000 won on weekdays and 60,000 won on weekends for 18 holes. While the par 3 holes range from 65 to 150 meters and the par 4 holes from 230 to 260 meters, the varied fairways and green slopes add complexity, making it challenging to score low. With excellent guest houses available, it seemed like a great idea to plan a 1-night 2-day trip with friends or family to enjoy a round.

"If golf course owners were to charge me expensive golf fees..."

While playing a round at the Jungwoon University Golf Practice Facility, I found myself momentarily lost in thought. I entertained a whimsical idea of creating a law that would prohibit golf course owners from using corporate cards and would require them to personally pay for rounds at least five times a month, submitting reports to the relevant authorities afterward. It's from the perspective of wanting golf course owners to understand why golfers feel aggrieved at having their wallets raided.

Would these owners truly feel satisfied after paying 300,000 or 500,000 won from their own pockets and saying, 'I played well!'? Wouldn't they raise a fuss over the expensive golf fees, even if it's a hundred percent justified? Some astute owners might resort to seeking out cheaper golf courses or employing all sorts of tricks to avoid submitting reports.

 

In foreign golf courses, it's commonplace for golfers to drive their own self-carts or electric carts and enjoy their rounds, and the absence of caddies is accepted as normal. While Korean golf courses still prefer the caddie system, I believe they cannot ignore the serious consideration of implementing a no-caddie system. As golf costs continue to rise, the caddie issue becomes a 'hot potato' not only for golfers but also for golf courses.

 

Golfers want to enjoy the game without paying expensive caddie fees, while golf courses struggle to find enough caddies to work, resulting in the need to import them from overseas. From that perspective, the introduction of a no-caddie system perfectly aligns with the interests of both golfers and golf courses. Some golf courses have already begun using 'AI carts' that follow golfers around, so it's possible that caddie-less golf courses could become the norm. Just as 'bus conductors' were easily found in the 1960s but have since disappeared, caddies may vanish, and the no-caddie system could become the standard.

Constructing golf courses on idle land such as mountainsides and riversides is necessary

Increasing supply and curbing windfall profits of golf courses... expecting profitability

In South Korea, there are numerous idle lands such as mountainsides and riversides owned by the government. With the era of 6 million golfers upon us, where the demand for golfing facilities is absolute, it is imperative for both the government and local authorities to actively utilize these idle lands to establish more public golf courses. With reasonable pricing, public golf courses can attract a large number of golfers, ensuring profitability. As the number of public golf courses increases, the excessive profits of private golf courses will diminish, benefiting the entire golf industry in South Korea.

Moreover, it is essential to create golf courses in various forms that suit the terrain. Golf courses with 9 holes or 6 holes, like the one at Jungwoon University, are equally commendable. For instance, the environmentally friendly golf course in Uiryung County, located along the Namgang River, offers green fees equivalent to 18-hole courses, with weekday rates at 45,000 won and weekend rates at 60,000 won. Local residents enjoy even lower rates, at 23,000 won on weekdays and 30,000 won on weekends. Consequently, the course is in high demand, often fully booked when reservations open online.

 

The Korea Sports Promotion Foundation, a public institution, operates Ecolian Golf Clubs in five locations nationwide, including Geochang, Yeonggwang, Jecheon, Jeongseon, and Gwangsan. Ecolian clubs receive reservations twice a month and are incredibly popular, often fully booked within moments. A friend who recently used the Ecolian club in Geochang expressed satisfaction with its excellent facilities and reasonable prices. They noted that despite the high-quality facilities, the green fees were only 60,000 won on weekdays and 80,000 won on weekends, with cart fees at 30,000 won on weekdays and 60,000 won on weekends, offering excellent value for money.

 

While golf course facilities are undoubtedly crucial, the escalating costs have made affordability more critical from the perspective of golfers. Even if the facilities are slightly inferior, golfers are willing to overlook them if the prices are reasonable. In the current situation of a rapid increase in the golfer population, it is crucial for the government, local authorities, and public institutions to take the lead in establishing affordable and high-value golf courses.

 

Today, inspired by my visit to Jungwoon University Golf Practice Facility, we've explored the expansion of public golf course development.

아시아골프연맹 임원세미나 참석... 미래 발전 논의

제가 소속되어 있는 아시아골프연맹(ASIAGA)의 세미나 및 임원 임명장 수여식이 있어서 2023년 4월 15일, 16일 충북 괴산군 괴산읍에 있는 중원대학교를 다녀왔습니다. 첫날인 15일에는 임명장 수여식과 연맹의 미래발전비전에 관한 김용호 회장의 발표가 있었고, 16일에는 중원대 캠퍼스 내에 있는 골프실습장에서 임원끼리 조를 편성, 라운드를 즐겼습니다.

2016년 사단법인으로 출범한 ASIAGA는 '아시아 골프의 미래를 여는 협회'를 캐치프레이즈로 내걸고 일 년에 3차례(5월, 8월, 10월)씩 자체 선발전을 통해 프로를 뽑고 있으며, 1천500만~5천만 원의 상금을 걸고 연간 3차례 오픈 투어를 펼치고 있습니다. 또 호주 PGA, PGAM, Ank Golf와 협약을 맺었으며, ASIAGA대회에는 말레이시아 PGA 선수들도 참가하는 등 국제대회로 발돋움하고 있습니다. 특히 올해는 전국에 광역본부와 지부장을 임명해 조직 활성화에 박차를 가하기로 했습니다. ASIAGA의 미래 발전상에 대해 골퍼 여러분들의 많은 기대와 관심 당부드립니다.

9홀짜리 중원대 골프연습장, 예약 동날 정도로 인기

중원대 골프연습장(jwugolf.jwu.ac.kr)은 상상했던 것 이상으로 괜찮은 편이었습니다. 친환경 골프코스로 설계되었고 학생들의 수업공간과 교직원들의 복지 및 외빈들의 여가활동을 위해 지어졌다고 합니다. 숏홀(파3) 7개, 미들홀(파 4) 2개 등 9홀로 구성되어 18홀 라운드를 하려면 두 번 돌아야 합니다. 이 골프장은 예약제로 운영되고 있는데, 워낙 인기가 좋아 금방 예약이 동날 지경이라고 직원은 귀띔해 주었습니다.

이 골프장의 인기도는 실제로 라운드를 해보니 실감할 수 있었습니다. 노캐디로 운영되는 데다 1,2인용 셀프카트(무료)를 끌고 다니며 골프장 구석구석을 누비는 것은 '자유 그 자체'였습니다. 부담 없이 카트를 맘대로 끌 수 있으니 즐거움은 두 배였다고나 할까요. 골프코스도 적절한 오르막 내리막으로 레이아웃 되어 있어서 카트를 끌고 18홀을 다 돌고 나니 온몸이 뻐근할 정도였습니다. 티오프 시간도 10분 간격이어서 앞팀 뒤팀 신경 안 쓰고 여유 있게 라운드를 즐길 수 있었고요.

 

'노캐디-셀프카트' 하면 뭐가 떠오릅니까? 바로 저비용 라운드일 것입니다. 중원대 골프연습장의 그린피는 주중 18홀 5만 원, 주말 6만 원입니다. 파 3홀은 65~150m, 파 4홀은 230~260m로 다소 짧은 게 흠입니다만, 페이웨이와 그린 경사도를 변화무쌍하게 설계함으로써 스코어가 쉽게 잘 나올 수 없는 변별력도 갖고 있었습니다. 훌륭한 시설을 갖춘 게스트 하우스도 있어서 친구나 가족들끼리 1박 2일 일정을 잡아 라운드를 해도 좋을 것 같았습니다.

"골프장 업주들에게 비싼 골프비용 내게 한다면..."

저는 중원대 골프연습장에서 라운드를 하며 잠시 상념에 젖기도 했습니다. 골프장 업주들에게 법인카드를 절대로 못쓰게 하고 한 달에 5번 이상씩 자기 돈으로 라운드를 한 뒤 관계당국에 보고서를 제출하도록 강제하는 법을 만들면 어떨까 하는 엉뚱한 생각을 해봤습니다. 지갑 속 돈을 강탈당하는 기분이 든다는 골퍼들의 원성이 왜 나오고 있는지 골프장 업주들도 직접 느껴봐야 한다는 차원에서 입니다..

그런 일이 진짜 벌어졌을 때 업주들이 과연 라운드를 마치고 자신의 지갑에서 30만 원, 50만 원을 지불하고서도 "골프 잘 쳤다!"라며 만족할까요? 100이면 100이 골프비용 비싸다고 난리를 치지 않을까요? 약삭빠른 업주들은 보고서는 내야 하니 값싼 골프장을 찾아 기웃거리거나 온갖 편법을 다 동원할지도 모릅니다.

 

외국 골프장에서는 셀프카트나 전동카트를 골퍼 스스로 몰고 다니며 라운드를 즐기고 있고 노캐디 제도도 당연한 것으로 받아들입니다. 우리나라 골프장들이 아직까지는 캐디제를 선호하고 있지만 머잖아 노캐디 제도 운용을 심각하게 고민하지 않을 수 없을 거라고 봅니다. 골프 비용이 계속 오르고 있는 상황에서 캐디 문제는 골퍼뿐만 아니라 골프장 입장에서도 '뜨거운 감자'인 셈입니다.

 

골퍼는 비싼 캐디피 안 내고 골프를 즐기고 싶고, 골프장은 일할 캐디를 구하지 못해 외국에서 수입을 해야 할 지경에 이르렀으니까요. 그런 측면에서 노캐디제 도입은 골퍼와 골프장의 입장이 딱 맞아떨어지는 셈입니다. 일부 골프장에서는 벌써 골퍼를 졸졸 따라다니는 'AI 카트'를 사용하기 시작했다고 하니 캐디 없는 골프장이 대세로 굳어질 가능성도 점쳐 봅니다. 1960년대에 쉽게 볼 수 있었던 '버스 차장'이 사라지듯, 캐디는 사라지고 노캐디제도로 정착될 수 있다는 것이지요.

산지·하천변 등 유휴지에 골프장 많이 건설해야

공급 늘려주고 골프장 폭리 차단... 수익성... 기대

대한민국에는 산지와 하천변 등 방치된 국공유지가 많습니다. 골프 인구 600만 명 시대를 맞아 절대적으로 공급이 부족한 만큼 정부와 지자체들은 이들 유휴지를 적극 활용, 퍼블릭 골프장을 많이 조성해야 합니다. 적정한 가격이면 골퍼들로 꽉꽉 차 공공 골프장의 수익성도 기대할 수 있을 것입니다. 공공 골프장이 많아지면 사설 골프장들의 '폭리 갑질'은 눈 녹듯 사라질 겁니다. 이는 대한민국 전체 골프산업을 살리는 길입니다.

또 지형에 맞게 다양한 형태로 골프장을 조성하는 것도 필요합니다. 꼭 18홀이 아니라 중원대 골프장처럼 9홀, 6홀짜리 골프장도 좋습니다. 의령군이 남강변에 조성한 의령 친환경골프장(9홀)의 그린피는 18홀 기준으로 평일은 4만 5천 원, 주말은 6만 원입니다. 의령군민은 평일 2만 3천 원, 주말 3만 원에 불과합니다. 그래서인지 인터넷 예약을 받으면 순식간에 마감이 될 정도로 인기가 높습니다.

 

공공기관인 국민체육진흥공단도 거창, 영광, 제천, 정선, 광산 등 전국 5곳에 에콜리안 골프클럽을 운영하고 있습니다. 에콜리안은 한 달에 두 번 예약을 받고 있는데, 순식간에 예약마감이 이뤄질 정도로 인기가 좋다고 합니다. 최근 에콜리안 거창을 이용했다는 지인 C 씨는 "골프장 수준이 상당했는데도 그린피가 주중 요금 6만 원, 주말 요금 8만 원인 데다 카트비도 주중 3만 원, 주말 6만 원으로 저렴해서 가성비가 매우 높았다."라며 만족감을 표시했습니다.

 

골프장 시설, 당연히 중요합니다. 그러나 비용이 천정부지로 치솟는 바람에 골퍼들 입장에서는 비용이 훨씬 더 중요해진 것 같습니다. 골프장 시설 수준이 약간 떨어져도 가격이 저렴하면 골퍼들은 언제든지 달려갈 준비가 되어 있다는 뜻입니다. 골퍼 인구가 급증한 상황에서 정부나 지자체, 공공기관이 적극 나서 이런 저렴하고 가성비 높은 골프장을 조성하는데 앞장서줘야 합니다.

 

오늘은 중원대 골프연습장 방문을 계기로 공공 골프장의 조성 확대에 대해 살펴보았습니다.
