One day in March 2023, while waiting for my wife who had gone to a hospital in Gimhae, Gyeongsangnam-do for business, I found myself in an unmanned coffee shop. Enjoying the utmost comfort with a 1,500 won coffee, I couldn't help but worry about the greed of Korean golf courses. A clear spring day... Suddenly, the stroke of luck with an eagle
It's a full-fledged spring. Plum blossoms have been blooming in various places in the southern part for quite some time, and white magnolias are proudly displaying their figures along the city streets. Soon, the cherry blossom trees scattered along the streams will burst their petals, enveloping the world in a white ecstasy.
March 9, 2023. I enjoyed an early morning round of golf at the golf course where I often go with my friends. In the divot marks left by the iron shots, I could barely see the grass sprouts growing, and the baby's soft green grass was also growing vigorously. It signaled that the eagerly awaited "green field" for golfers was just around the corner.
I recorded my first eagle of the year in this round. After hitting a 240m drive with my driver on the 450m long hole, I successfully hit the second shot with a 7-wood, landing it 4.5m behind the pin on the green, and then sunk the ball with a one-putt. This hole is known for its relatively short distance despite being a long hole, so if you hit the driver well, you can leave about 180-200m to the green, making it a place where many golfers aim for a two-on.
Course designers, unforgiving of reckless challenges
However, the course designer placed a large two-tier bunker to the left of the green entrance. If you get greedy with your second shot, putting too much power into your shoulders and arms, there's a high chance of a hook, sending the ball sharply to the left. The distance from the bunker's edge to the green, 10 meters above, is challenging even for pro players, ranging from 60 to 100 meters. Therefore, many players, tempted by the challenge, end up regretting their decision after falling into the "trap" that the designer strategically placed.
I myself have had such experiences, so I get nervous when playing this hole. Therefore, after the tee shot, I briefly pondered whether to aim for a minimum birdie with a 7-wood for the second shot or to send an iron shot about 130 to 160 meters and safely aim for a par with a wedge for the third shot. However, I couldn't resist the "sweet yet reckless temptation" of "Let's go for the 7-wood!", and thanks to luck, I was able to make an eagle.
Jumping in with a "sink or swim" attitude to grab an eagle was not the wisest choice. Golf is an exercise in minimizing mistakes and a game of probabilities. Yet, even with a 60-80% chance of failure and past experiences of failure, aiming for a wood shot for the second attempt was reckless. Relying on luck for a shot that could result in a double or worse was an amateur-level course management decision.
Everything for Comfort in an Unmanned Coffee Shop
That afternoon in Kimhae, Gyeongsangnam-do, I stumbled upon an unmanned coffee shop. After finishing a round of golf, I stopped by Kimhae city to meet my wife on her business trip, and it was during this time that I discovered the unmanned coffee shop. The meeting place was on the outskirts of Kimhae, in an area densely populated with three-story townhouses. With some time to spare before our appointment, I was looking for a place to relax when I came across the unmanned coffee shop. Although it had about 20 seats and appeared spacious inside, I naturally assumed there would be staff working. To my surprise, there was only one female customer present, and no visible employees.
Feeling a bit unsure if I had entered the right place, I hesitated, but the woman kindly approached me and said, "Since it's an unmanned coffee shop, you can use the coffee vending machine at the entrance for coffee, and payment can be made with a credit card." A freshly brewed americano from the vending machine cost only 1,500 won. I enjoyed the coffee in the unmanned coffee shop for about an hour until my wife called, savoring the utmost comfort.
Upon closer inspection, the signboard of this 24-hour coffee shop was quite charmingly named "Coffee Lovers 24." Seeing "00 points" written in one corner of the signboard made me think it might be a chain store. The serene music playing in the background, cozy interior lighting, and green plants placed throughout made it a cost-effective unmanned coffee shop with everything one could ask for. The relaxed atmosphere attracted young people with thin wallets, who frequented the place. Some were even studying diligently with their computers turned on. Since it operated 24 hours a day, young people in need of space could order a 1,500 won coffee and study to their heart's content throughout the night. It was truly an invaluable unmanned coffee shop.
"Is it normal for the green fee to exceed 300,000 won?"
It's not necessarily the expensive and flashy coffee shops that provide satisfaction. In this unmanned coffee shop, simple yet complete, I pondered over the value of 1,500 won. The 'degree of happiness' I experienced for that 1,500 won was much higher than the 15,000 won coffee I had at a luxury hotel. It was a 'composite hospitality' that included no financial burden, comfort, and freedom, among others.
While enjoying the leisure and hospitality of a 1,500 won coffee, a disturbing thought crossed my mind. It was about the exorbitant green fees I recently read about on a blog, particularly in golf courses in the Gyeonggi region. Especially shocking was one golf course charging over 300,000 won for weekend green fees, far exceeding the standards of other golf courses in the country. Compared to public golf courses in Japan, it's 7 to 8 times higher. Who would even go to such golf courses to play? Even as a corporate entertainment expense, it seems like 'plundering.' Is this something that can happen in a normal country?
Moreover, a companion who recently returned from a golf trip to Vietnam shared a 'harsh reality' with me. Most of the golf course's clientele were Koreans, so much so that it took them six hours to finish an 18-hole round due to overcrowding. It shows that as soon as COVID-19 restrictions were lifted, Korean golfers began to avoid expensive domestic golf courses. Instead, they flocked to golf courses in Southeast Asian countries like Thailand and Myanmar. Why do Koreans have to spend their precious dollars at foreign golf courses? Korean golf courses need to wake up. Government authorities should approach this from the perspective of preventing capital outflow.
As I sipped my 1,500 won coffee in the unmanned coffee shop today, I was immersed in a sense of comfort, leisure, and freedom. However, thoughts of the exorbitant costs of Korean golf courses and their 'reckless and endless greed' crossed my mind again, making me feel melancholic.

무인 커피숍서 '한국 골프' 걱정하다 <20>
완연한 봄날... 불쑥 찾아온 '이글 행운'
완연한 봄입니다. 남녘 곳곳에는 매화가 핀 지 제법 오래되었고 시내 도로변에는 하얗게 만발한 목련이 도도한 척 자태를 뽐내고 있습니다. 곧 지천에 널려 있는 벚나무들이 저마다 꽃잎을 터트려 세상을 하얀 황홀경에 빠트릴 것입니다.
2023년 3월 9일. 저는 평소처럼 지인들과 자주 가는 골프장에서 새벽 라운드를 즐겼습니다. 아이언으로 내려친 디봇 자국 속에서 겨우내 웅크리고 있다가 삐쭉 자라고 있는 잔디 싹을 확인할 수 있었고, 아기의 솜털 같은 그린 잔디도 쑥쑥 자라고 있었습니다. 골퍼들이 기다리는 '그린 필드'가 코앞에 다가왔음을 알려주고 있는 것입니다.
저는 이날 라운드에서 올해 첫 이글을 기록했습니다. 450m의 롱홀에서 드라이버 티샷으로 240m를 날리는 손맛을 본 뒤 7번 우드로 도전한 세컨드 샷이 깃대 뒤 4.5m 온그린에 성공했고, 원 퍼팅으로 홀컵에 볼을 집어넣었습니다. 이 홀은 롱홀치고는 거리가 짧아 드라이버를 잘 쳤을 경우 그린까지 180~200m 정도를 남기기 때문에 투 온을 많이 노리는 곳입니다.
코스 설계자, 무모한 도전 용서 않아
그러나 코스 설계자는 그린 입구 좌측에 커다란 2단 벙커를 배치했습니다. 투 온 욕심을 내면 어깨와 팔 등에 힘이 잔뜩 들어가기 십상이어서 왼쪽으로 볼이 확 감기는 훅이 발생할 가능성이 높습니다. 벙커 초입에서 10m 높이에 있는 그린까지의 거리는 프로 선수들도 쉽지 않은 60~100m. 그래서 많은 플레이어가 투 온 도전을 했다가 설계자가 미소 지으며 배치해 놓은 '함정'인 벙커에 빠트린 뒤 뒷모래 앞모래를 철퍽철퍽하다 더블보기 이상을 기록하고 후회하곤 하지요.
저 역시 그런 경험이 많아서 이 홀에만 오면 긴장합니다. 따라서 티샷을 한 뒤 7번 우드로 2 온을 도전해 최소한 버디를 노릴지, 아이언으로 130~160m 정도 보내놓고 웨지로 안전하게 3 온으로 파를 할지를 놓고 잠시 고민했습니다. 그러나 "7번 우드 잡아봐!"라는 '달콤하고도 무모한 유혹'을 끝내 뿌리치지 못했고, 행운 덕분에 이글을 잡을 수 있었습니다.
죽기 아니면 살기식으로 덤벼들어 이글을 잡았지만 저의 그 선택은 바람직하지 않은 것입니다. 왜냐하면 골프는 실수를 줄이는 운동이자 확률게임입니다. 그런데도 실패할 확률이 60~80%나 되고 이미 실패한 경험이 있었으면서도 또 우드를 잡고 2 온을 노린 것은 무모했던 겁니다. 더블보기 이상을 기록할 수 있는데도 한 방을 노린 행운에 기댔으니 아마추어 수준의 코스 매니지먼트를 한 것이지요.
무인 커피숍 '안락함의 모든 것' 갖춰
이날 오후 경남 김해의 한 무인커피숍. 라운드 이후 저는 출장을 간 아내를 만나기 위해 김해시에 들렀다가 이 무인커피숍을 발견했습니다. 약속 장소는 3층짜리 연립주택이 밀집한 김해시내 외곽지역이었고, 약속 시간이 남아 쉴 곳을 찾던 중 무인커피숍을 발견한 것입니다. 좌석 20여 개에 내부가 제법 넓어 당연히 종업원이 근무하는 줄 알았는데, 종업원은 보이지 않고 여성 손님 한 분만 있었습니다.
잘못 들어왔나 싶어 두리번거리고 있는데 그 여성 손님이 "무인커피숍이어서 커피는 입구 자판기를 이용하면 되고 결제는 신용카드로 하면 됩니다."라며 친절하게 안내를 해주었어요. 자판기에서 뽑은 따끈한 아메리카노 한잔 값은 고작 1,500원. 무인커피숍에서 그 커피를 마시면서 아내의 호출이 있을 때까지 1시간여 동안 저는 '최상의 안락함'을 누릴 수 있었습니다.
자세히 살펴보니 24시간 운영하는 이 커피숍의 간판 이름도 '커피에 반하다 24'로 참 예뻤습니다. 간판 한 귀퉁이에 ' 00점'으로 적혀 있는 것으로 보아 체인점인 것 같았습니다. 잔잔한 음악이 흐르고 아늑한 실내조명에 푸른 화초를 곳곳에 배치하는 등 갖출 것은 다 갖춘 가성비 높은 무인커피숍이었어요. 분위기가 워낙 편안하다 보니 지갑이 얇은 젊은이들이 수시로 들락거렸습니다. 어떤 친구는 아예 컴퓨터를 켜놓고 열심히 공부하고 있었고요. 24시간 운영하는 커피숍이니까 공간이 필요한 젊은이들은 1,500원 커피 한 잔 시켜놓고 밤새며 맘껏 공부할 수도 있을 것 같았습니다. 참으로 고마운 무인커피숍이 아닐 수 없었습니다.
그린피 30만 원도 훌쩍..."이게 정상인가"
그렇습니다. 비싸고 화려한 커피숍이어야 만족감을 주는 것은 아니지요. 소박하지만 갖출 것은 다 갖춘, 이 무인커피숍에서 저는 1,500원의 가치를 생각해 보았습니다. 그 1,500원을 지불하고 누린 '행복의 정도'는 일류호텔 커피숍에서 마신 15,000원짜리보다 훨씬 높았습니다. 지불의 부담 없음, 안락함, 자유로움 등 좀처럼 누릴 수 없었던 '복합적인 호사'였습니다.
이렇게 1,500원짜리 커피 한잔의 여유와 호사를 누리면서도 언뜻 뇌리를 스쳐가는 게 있었습니다. 며칠 전 블로그에서 본 경인지역 골프장의 경악할만한 수준의 그린피가 그것입니다. 특히 한 골프장의 경우 주말 그린피가 30만 원을 훌쩍 넘었는데, 이는 국내 타 골프장에 비해서도 월등히 높은 수준입니다. 일본 대중골프장에 비해선 무려 7~8배나 비쌉니다. 도대체 이런 골프장에는 누가 가서 치는지 이해할 수가 없습니다. 개인은 이런 '무자비한 수준'의 그린피를 내고 골프를 즐기려고 하진 않을 거고, 감당할 수도 없을 겁니다. 아무리 기업의 접대비용으로 친다고 하더라도 이건 '약탈 수준'입니다. 이게 정상적인 나라에서 있을 수 있는 일입니까?
또 이날 저와 함께 라운드를 한 동반자가 전해 준 '뼈 때리는' 이야기가 귓전을 맴돌았습니다. 최근 베트남 원정 라운드를 하고 왔는데, 골프장 내장객 대부분이 한국사람이더라는 겁니다. 그것도 너무 밀려서 18홀 경기를 마치는데 무려 6시간이나 걸렸다는군요. 코로나가 풀리자마자 한국인 골퍼들이 비싼 국내 골프장을 외면하기 시작했음을 보여주는 대목입니다. 태국 미얀마 등 동남아 곳곳에는 한국인 골퍼들로 넘쳐난다고 합니다. 왜 한국인들이 아까운 달러를 외국 골프장에 갖다 바쳐야 할까요? 한국 골프장들 정신 바짝 차려야 합니다. 정부 당국도 국부 유출 방지 차원에서 접근해야 합니다.
저는 오늘 무인커피숍에서 1,500원짜리 커피 한잔을 들며 안락함, 여유로움, 자유로움 등이 어우러진 행복감에 젖어들었습니다. 그런데 한국 골프장들의 야속한 골프비용, 그들의 '무모하고도 끝없는 탐욕'이 뇌리를 스치면서 다시 우울해져 버렸습니다.
