The probability of a beginner achieving a hole-in-one is 1 in 12,000
Before delving into my own hole-in-one story, let's first clarify the probability related to a hole-in-one. Every golfer dreams of achieving a hole-in-one at least once. It's when a tee shot on a par 3 hole goes directly into the hole with one stroke. Also known as an ace, it records a score of -2. While a hole-in-one is not entirely unrelated to golfing skill, it also heavily depends on luck and chance. That's why some people manage to achieve it shortly after taking up the sport, while others never achieve it in a lifetime.
According to Golf Digest, the probability of a tour professional achieving a hole-in-one from 150 yards away is about 1 in 3,000, for a single golfer it's about 1 in 5,000, and for beginner golfers, it's around 1 in 12,000. Naturally, as the distance decreases, the probability of a hole-in-one increases, and vice versa.
Achieving consecutive holes-in-one... the probability is 1 in 162 million
The records related to holes-in-one are diverse, indeed. If we were to compile all those stories, we could probably write dozens or even hundreds of books. For instance, weekend golfer Mr. Choi made headlines in October 2022 when he achieved consecutive holes-in-one on the 5th and 8th holes at Sangrok Country Club in Gimhae. The probability of achieving consecutive holes-in-one like Mr. Choi is said to be 16.2 million to 1. However, the National Hole-In-One Registry in the United States estimates this probability to be 67 million to 1.
Then there's Mr. Kim, who at the age of 86, scored a hole-in-one on the 3rd hole at Blue One Yongin Country Club last October. What's even more astonishing is that Mr. Kim had previously scored his first hole-in-one nine years ago in 2013 on the same course, with the same companions and caddies as he had during last year's round. To have the same member achieve a hole-in-one again on the same course after nine years is nothing short of incredible luck. The probability of one person achieving two holes-in-one, like Mr. Kim or myself, is 17 million to 1, while the probability of consecutive holes-in-one by the same playing partner is 1.3 million to 1.
With the current challenging economic situation, it's no wonder that lottery ticket sales are booming. The odds of winning the top prize in the domestic lottery are 8.14 million to 1. So, what about the probability of a person being struck by lightning? The odds of being struck by lightning while walking along the street throughout the year are 1 million to 1. Therefore, it's safe to say that the probability of being struck by lightning while flying on an airplane is much lower.
Looking at these probabilistic figures, you can see that my experiences of being struck by lightning while flying and achieving two holes-in-one are quite remarkable, wouldn't you agree?

저의 홀인원 이야기를 하기에 앞서 홀인원과 관련한 확률부터 정리해 보도록 하겠습니다. 골퍼라면 누구나 꼭 한 번쯤 해보고 싶은 것이 홀인원(Hole In One)입니다. 파3 숏홀에서 티샷 한 볼이 단번에 홀에 쏙 들어가는 것을 말합니다. 에이스라고도 하는데 스코어 기록은 -2가 됩니다. 홀인원은 골프 실력과 관계가 없는 것은 아니지만, 그렇다고 골프만 잘 친다고 챙길 수 있는 것도 아닙니다. 바로 행운, 운빨이 따라야 된다는 겁니다. 그래서인지 머리 얹은 지 며칠 만에 홀인원을 기록한 분들도 꽤 있습니다. 평생 홀인원을 못하는 분도 있고요.
골프다이제스트에 실린 기사를 보면 150야드의 거리에서 투어프로의 홀인원 확률은 3,000분의 1 정도, 싱글 골퍼의 홀인원 확률은 5,000분의 1, 초보골프는 12,000분의 1 정도라고 합니다. 당연히 거리가 짧아지면 홀인원 확률이 더 높아질 것이고 거리가 길면 확률은 훨씬 떨어질 것입니다.

홀인원과 관련한 기록도 다양합니다. 그 사연들을 다 모으면 책 수십, 수백 권을 쓸 수 있을 겁니다. 주말골퍼인 최 모 씨는 2022년 10월 김해 상록 cc에서 동호인들과 라운드를 하다 전반 5번 홀과 전반 8번 홀에서 연속으로 홀인원을 기록한 사실이 언론을 통해 알려졌습니다. 최 씨처럼 두 홀 연속 홀인원을 할 확률은 16,200만 분의 1이라고 합니다. 그런데 미국홀인원관리소는 두 홀 연속 홀인원 할 확률을 6,700만 분의 1로 잡고 있습니다.
또 86세의 김 모씨는 지난해 10월 블루원 용인 cc 서코스 3번 홀에서 홀인원을 기록했다고 합니다. 고령임에도 홀인원을 해냈지만 더욱 놀라운 것은 이 분은 9년 전인 2013년 똑같은 코스에서 작년 10월 라운드를 했던 같은 동반자, 같은 캐디와 함께 생애 첫 홀인원을 했다고 합니다. 똑같은 멤버가 9년 만에 똑같은 코스에서 또 홀인원을 했으니, 이건 운(運)을 거론하지 않으면 설명할 수가 없습니다. 김 씨나 저처럼 한 사람이 두 번의 홀인원을 할 확률은 1,700만 분의 1이고, 같은 조 동반자가 연이어 홀인원을 할 확률은 130만 분의 1이라고 합니다.
요즘 경기가 어려워졌기 때문인지 로또복권 판매소 앞을 지나가다 보면 복권을 사려는 사람들이 줄을 설 정도로 붐비더군요. 국내 로또 1등에 당첨될 확률은 814만 분의 1이라고 합니다. 그렇다면 사람이 벼락을 맞을 확률을 어떻게 될까요? 1년 내내 길을 걷다가 벼락을 맞을 확률은 100만 분의 1이라고 합니다. 그렇다면 저처럼 비행기를 타고 가다 벼락을 맞을 확률은 당연히 훨씬 떨어질 것입니다.
이렇게 확률적인 수치를 놓고 보니까 제가 비행기를 타고 가다 벼락을 맞고, 홀인원을 2번이나 했으니 예사롭지 않다는 것을 아시겠지요?
