"Oh! It's me too..." Unexpectedly, a hole-in-one came to me
Every golfer dreams of making a hole-in-one, especially on a short hole. Hole-in-one, shortened as "HIO", is often referred to as an "ace" by Americans. Even though I never thought I'd have any connection to it, the hole-in-one came unexpectedly to me in 2021. It felt like a miracle, pure ecstasy. But the second one came too easily, too quickly. Just 4 months and 10 days after the first one, I experienced another "stroke of luck". I couldn't help but wonder, "Why is it coming back so easily?" or "What does it mean for me to have two hole-in-ones?"
According to records, Norman Manley holds the record for the most hole-in-ones in a lifetime with 59. Among professional golfers, Man-Sill Davis has recorded 50 hole-in-ones. Pros find it challenging to conquer par-3 holes because missing the tee shot or failing to putt well leaves no room for recovery. Mistakes on short holes often lead to bogeys or double bogeys, resulting in frustration. Making a hole-in-one instantly reduces the score by 2 strokes. In professional tournaments, not only does a hole-in-one reduce the score, but it also comes with lucrative rewards. From sponsor-provided prizes worth millions to hundreds of millions of won, a hole-in-one is a valuable achievement for professional golfers.
On November 21, 2021, at Haeundae Country Club, Royal Course, hole number 9, I stood at the tee box, aiming for a pin at a distance of 135 meters. Sensing a slight headwind on my nose, I grabbed my Honma LB-606 9 iron. I had gifted this club to my wife long ago, but she found the shaft (carbon) too stiff, so it lay neglected in the garage for quite some time. Feeling remorseful, I started using the club myself for a few months. The clubhead felt heavy, and the shaft felt strong, exactly as my wife had complained about. The clubhead had a clear 'L' engraved on it, indicating it was designed for women. Using this 9 iron, I made my second hole-in-one after the first one, forging a strange connection with it.

The smooth yet powerful impact resulted in a cheerful sound of contact, accompanied by a satisfying sensation in my hands. After assuming the finishing posture, I watched as the ball soared into the sky, greeted by cheers of "Nice shot, great direction!" from my companions. The ball, landing just in front of the green, bounced once before disappearing right into the hole cup.
"Wow! It's a hole-in-one!"
"What? A hole-in-one? Did I really just hit a hole-in-one? For real?"
I was so surprised that I could only blink, doubting my own ears. Even after hearing the cheers from my companions, I couldn't believe it. Our helpful caddy jumped up and down, cheering ecstatically. With a trembling heart, I approached the green. Could it really be a hole-in-one? Was it truly happening? Inside the hole cup where the flagstick was planted, a white ball (a Callaway 3) sat calmly. The ball I had hit from 135 meters away had flown through the air and claimed the hole, looking up at me with a grin. The pitch mark from where the ball landed was only about 20 cm away from the hole cup.

My caddie and I kneeled down and then made a deep bow upon seeing the ball in the hole. It was a moment where I had finally seized the hole-in-one I had always dreamed of, with my own hands and body. After making a hole-in-one, the caddie carefully places the hole-in-one ball into a special bag prepared in advance and presents it to the golfer. Along with the commemorative plaque for my first hole-in-one, gifted by my companions, that ball now rests safely in the display cabinet of my living room.
Among golfers, there's a saying that "if you make a hole-in-one, you'll have good luck for three years." Especially, business-minded golfers are fond of making hole-in-ones as they believe it brings good fortune. Just before I made my hole-in-one, I witnessed my close friend and fellow club member hitting a tee shot with a 4-iron from 175m at the 3rd hole of the same Royal Course, and the ball landed right in the hole. Perhaps I absorbed his hole-in-one energy, leading me to achieve mine. So whenever I meet that friend, we enthusiastically share our hole-in-one memories.
Now, what kind of gift was given to me, a person who has made a hole-in-one? I haven't had the luck to win the lottery or receive any financial windfalls yet. However, upon reflection, I believe the greatest "hole-in-one gift" bestowed upon me was the restoration of my health through golf, after years of excessive drinking during my working life. Additionally, obtaining a teaching pro license through a coaching certification and being able to communicate with the world through my golf blog, "Life and Golf," where I can discuss life through my passion for golf, are also significant gifts. - "아! 나에게도"... 불쑥 찾아온 홀인원
골퍼라면 누구나 숏홀에서 샷 한 번에 쏙 집어넣는 홀인원을 꿈꿉니다. 홀인원(Hole-in-one)은 'Hole Made In One Stroke'를 줄인 말인데, 미국인들은 홀인원 대신 '에이스(Ace)'를 즐겨 씁니다. AP 등 공식 언론 매체에서도 '에이스'를 더 즐겨 쓴다고 합니다. 저하고는 절대로 인연이 없을 거라고 여겼던 그 홀인원이 2021년 불쑥 찾아왔습니다. 기적이었고, 감격 그 자체였습니다. 그런데 두 번째 홀인원은 너무 쉽게, 빨리 찾아 오더군요. 첫 홀인원을 하고 불과 4개월 10일 만에 두 번째 '손맛'을 봤거든요. "그렇게 꼭꼭 숨어 있더니 또 찾아와?", "그렇다면 너 홀인원이란 존재는 뭐냐?"라는 생각이 들 정도였어요.
기록에 따르면 미국인 노먼 맨리는 생애 통산 59번의 홀인원을 거머쥐어 최다 기록자로 꼽힙니다. 프로골퍼 중에서는 맨실 데이비스가 50번의 홀인원을 잡아 최다를 기록하고 있고요. 프로선수들은 파3 홀 공략을 힘들어합니다. 최소한 3번 만에 홀인을 해야 하는데 티샷을 잘 못하거나 퍼팅을 잘 못하면 만회할 기회가 없으니까요. 숏홀에서 삐끗했다가는 보기, 더블보기를 기록해 멘붕에 빠지는 상황이 자주 발생합니다. 홀인원을 하면 단숨에 스코어를 2타나 줄입니다. 프로대회에서는 홀인원을 하면 스코어를 줄여서도 좋지만, 짭짤한 부상(副賞)도 기다리고 있습니다. 스폰서로부터 제공받은 수천만 원짜리, 수억 원짜리 홀인원 부상까지 차지할 수 있으니 프로선수들에게 홀인원이란 '꿩 먹고 알 먹고', '도랑치고 가재 잡고'와 같은 고마운 존재입니다.
2021년 11월 21일 해운대cc 로얄코스 9번 홀. 저는 135m 거리의 핀을 공략하기 위해 티박스에 섰습니다. 코끝으로 전해진 미세한 앞바람을 느끼고 혼마(LB-606) 9번 아이언을 잡았습니다. 이 클럽은 오래전 아내에게 선물했으나 샤프트(카본)가 너무 강해 쓰지 못하겠다고 해서 한참 동안 창고에 방치했던 거였습니다. 아깝다는 생각이 들어서 제가 당시에 그 클럽을 몇 개월 동안 쓰고 있었습니다. 헤드가 무겁고, 샤프트도 강하다는 느낌을 받아 아내의 불평은 충분히 이해가 갔습니다. 그 클럽 헤드에는 'L'자가 선명하게 새겨져 있는데, 이는 여성용 클럽이란 뜻입니다. 이 클럽 9번 아이언으로 첫 홀인원에 이어 두 번째 홀인원까지 잡았으니 저와는 묘한 인연을 나눈 셈이 됩니다.

부드러우면서도 강력한 임팩트가 이뤄져 경쾌한 타구음과 함께 손맛이 참 좋다는 느낌이었습니다. 피니시 자세를 취한 뒤 하늘로 치솟는 공을 바라보고 있는데, 동반자들이 일제히 "굿 샷, 방향좋다!"를 외쳤습니다. 깃대 앞 그린에 떨어진 공은 한번 톡 튀는가 싶더니 바로 홀컵으로 쏙 사라져 버렸습니다.
"와! 홀인원이다!"
"뭐? 홀인원? 내가 홀인원을 했다고? 정말? 진짜야?"
저는 놀라서 눈만 멀뚱거렸고, 제 귀를 의심했습니다. 동반자들의 환호성을 듣고서도 믿기지 않았습니다. 우리 팀을 도와준 캐디는 펄쩍펄쩍 뛰며 환호성을 질렀습니다. 떨리는 가슴을 안고 그린으로 다가갔습니다. 과연 홀인원이네? 진짜 홀인원 맞네? 깃대가 꽂혀 있는 홀컵 안에는 하얀 공(캘러웨이 3번)이 가만히 앉아 있었습니다. 135m에서 때렸던 '그 공'이 붕~ 하늘을 단숨에 날아와 홀 안을 차지한 뒤 저를 올려다보며 방긋 미소 짓고 있었습니다. 공이 그린에 떨어질 때 생기는 피치 마크는 홀컵에서 불과 20㎝ 정도 떨어져 있었습니다.

저와 캐디는 홀컵에 있는 공을 보고 무릎을 꿇었습니다. 그리곤 큰 절을 했습니다. 평생 꼭 한 번은 하고 싶었던 그 홀인원을 저의 손과 몸으로 붙잡아 낸 것입니다. 홀인원을 하면 캐디는 미리 준비한 복주머니에 홀인원공을 정성스럽게 싼 뒤 골퍼에게 줍니다. 동반자들이 선물한 생애 첫 홀인원 기념패와 함께 그 공은 집 거실 장식장 속에 고이 간직되어 있습니다.
골퍼들 사이에서는 "홀인원을 하면 3년동안 재수가 좋다."는 말을 주고받습니다. 특히 사업을 하는 골퍼들은 홀인원을 하면 대박이 난다고 해서 좋아합니다. 제가 홀인원을 하기 얼마 전, 동반자이자 굉장히 아끼는 동호회 후배가 같은 로얄코스 3번 홀 175m의 거리에서 4번 아이언으로 티샷 한 것이 홀에 쏙 들어가는 장면을 직접 목격한 일이 있었습니다. 어쩌면 그 후배의 홀인원 기세를 받아 저도 홀인원을 했는지 모를 일입니다. 그래서 그 후배를 만날 때마다 홀인원 추억을 신나게 나누곤 합니다.
그렇다면 홀인원을 한 저에게는 어떤 선물이 주어졌을까요? 로또에서 당첨되거나 금전적인 부분에서 '아직까지는(?)', '아직까지는(?)' 행운을 받지 못했습니다. 그러나 가만히 생각해보니 직장생활을 할 때 잦은 과음으로 망가진 몸을 골프를 통해 건강을 회복한 것이 저에게 주어진 제일 큰 '홀인원 선물'이 아닐까 싶습니다. 거기다 프로테스트에 도전해 티칭프로 라이선스를 취득한 것도, 좋아하는 골프를 내세워 인생을 논할 수 있는 '인생골프'라는 블로그로 세상과 소통하게 된 것도 큰 선물입니다. 그래서 저는 앞으로도 할 수 있을 때까지 골프를 즐기고, '인생 골프'를 통해 계속 세상을 만나려고 합니다. 독자 여러분들의 많은 사랑과 성원 당부드립니다.
